Originally settled in 1834 by Deacon Churchill, and first known as Babcock’s Grove, Glen Ellyn had become a resort town for Chicago residents by the turn of the century. Lake Ellyn, a 10-acre man-made lake, was the site of a popular hotel that attracted visitors from the city. Although the old hotel is no longer there, many charming homes from that era have survived gracefully, and Lake Ellyn today is the site of state and national speed-skating competitions. Vintage architecture, tree-lined streets, rolling terrain, and charming antique and specialty shops all add to the community’s woodsy New England flavor.
The Chicago Northwestern Railroad commuter train stops in Glen Ellyn and takes 40 minutes to reach Chicago’s Loop. A special commuter shuttle bus system connects residents to the train station located in the heart of downtown Glen Ellyn. O’Hare Airport is just over a one half-hour drive. Glen Ellyn is a short distance away from the East-West Tollway (I-88), which is known as the “High Tech Corridor,” and the North-Shore Toll Road, also known as I-355.
Glen Ellyn is served by elementary school Districts 41 and 89 and high school District 87. The village has eight elementary schools, two junior high schools, two high schools and two Catholic grade schools. These schools consistently rank among the finest in the state and nation. The College of DuPage, a junior college, offers a wide curriculum. C.O.D. also offers an Adult Institute, a Business and Professional Institute, as well as a Performing Arts Center and Sports Complex. The DuPage Area Vocational Education Association for high school students is also located nearby.
Modern shops, restaurants, boutiques and numerous antique shops are clustered in the downtown area. Yorktown Mall in Lombard, Stratford Square in Bloomingdale, Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg, Fox Valley Mall in Aurora, and the elegant Oak Brook Center are all within 20-minutes of Glen Ellyn and offer a wide variety of shops and department stores.
The Glen Ellyn Park District oversees 26 parks and has programs to suit all ages and abilities. The Village Links is a 27-hole championship golf course maintained by the Park District. Lake Ellyn provides scenic recreation for all seasons; ice skating, playgrounds and picnic areas, and special events throughout the year. The YMCA and the private Glen Oak Country Club, as well as two indoor ice rinks are also located in Glyn Ellyn. Tennis and racquetball courts are nearby.
Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield, Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, Elmhurst Hospital in Elmhurst, Glen Oak Medical Center in Glendale Heights, and the Glen Ellyn Clinic, which also offers emergency care, serve the area.
