Libertyville was incorporated in 1882 with a population of 500 under the name Independence Grove. Libertyville, as it is known today, has a population of just over 20,000. Over the past decade a movement to preserve space and balance commercial and industrial growth has been carefully orchestrated by the Main Street Program. In the meantime new single-family developments have blossomed. All of this has allowed Libertyville to become one of the most highly desired communities in all of Illinois.

The newly developed downtown Main Street area now boasts fine restaurants, shops, financial institutions, spas, a movie theater and live entertainment. Located right downtown is the Metra's Station for convenient commuting.

Transportation
The Tri-State Tollway (I-294) and U.S. 41 are located nearby. Drive time into the city is about an hour. Metra’s Milwaukee District trains board in downtown Libertyville. The Chicago & Northwestern rail line can be caught in nearby Lake Bluff. Drive time into the city is anywhere from 45 to 90 minutes, depending on the time of day. Local bus service is available.

Schools
Libertyville students attend District 70 elementary schools. High school students attend Libertyville High School in District 128. Libertyville High was one of 23 high schools nationwide to be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education for its strong drug prevention program. Lake Forest College and the College of Lake County are both located nearby.

Shopping
A number of strip malls can be found in town featuring specialty shops like the Heritage Galleria, Langworthys, and The Bridal Shoppe. Gurnee Mills is a regional supermall featuring over a mile of factory outlet stores required by lease to discount all merchandise 25 to 30 percent.

Recreation
Libertyville’s Park District provides two municipal swimming pools and a golf course in addition to 14 parks covering 495 acres of land. The David Adler Cultural Center sponsors music and art programs. The Park District also sponsors a variety of ski trips and summer day camps.

Hospitals
Condell Medical Center is a local 200-bed facility employing over 250 medical specialists. Areas of specialization include obstetrics, gynecology, oncology, cardiac rehabilitation, inter-generational day care, and outpatient surgery.

Fifteen different denominations are represented within the community, many other congregations can be found in surrounding communities.
