Rich in history and culture, the Douglas community is named for famous politician and lawyer Stephen A. Douglas, who purchased 70 acres of land located along the lake between 33rd and 35th street in 1852 that would eventually function as a Civil War military camp. Douglas includes the Bronzeville area, which was known in the early 20th century as the "Black Metropolis," one of the nation's most significant landmarks of African-American urban history.
