This North Shore suburb was developed as a model community in 1869. Strict zoning ordinances were set to ensure the preservation of nature. Streets and homes were built along the natural contours of the land for the most distinctive environment possible. This tree-lined village has been the proud receiver of the "Tree City USA" award annually since 1985.
Transportation
Local commuter train service is available in town with express travel to the city in 29 minutes. The Edens Expressway (I-94) has an interchange two miles west of town. Local bus service is available.
Schools
District 35 serves local elementary students with an emphasis on critical thinking and writing skills. Students then move on to New Trier High School in nearby Winnetka, a school highly regarded for academic excellence. Several private schools are available in neighboring communities.
Shopping
Downtown Glencoe contains many small specialty shops and services. Old Orchard Mall in nearby Skokie features upscale shops including major department stores. Northbrook Court in Northbrook and Edens Plaza in Wilmette are also very popular among residents.
Recreation
Bordered by Lake Michigan to the east, Glencoe incorporates community beaches, tennis courts, one public and two private golf courses, and bike trails. Glencoe’s active Park District maintains 44 parks and offers year-round recreation for all ages in both indoor and outdoor facilities. The 320-acre Chicago Botanic Garden is located to the west of the village and offers various horticulture classes for enthusiasts.
Hospitals
Evanston Hospital is a full service medical-surgical care facility with an 800-member staff. Highland Park Hospital is a level II trauma center with over 500 medical professionals practicing in nearly 50 areas of specialization. Both hospitals are located just a few miles from Glencoe.
